Does GPS Work Without Internet? What Works Offline and What Doesn’t
GPS itself works without internet, but your map app may not. Here is what actually works offline, what needs data, and how to set up your phone for no-signal navigation.
Does GPS work without internet? Yes. Your phone’s GPS receiver calculates your location from satellite signals, which need no mobile data or Wi-Fi. What usually fails offline is the map app around it: without a connection it cannot download map tiles, search for places or fetch live traffic. If you download maps in advance, you can navigate with no internet at all.
How GPS actually works
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. A network of satellites continuously broadcasts timing signals. Your phone’s receiver listens to several of them at once and uses the differences in signal timing to work out where you are. Modern phones also use other satellite systems alongside GPS, which helps them get a position faster and more reliably.
Crucially, this is a one-way process. The satellites transmit and your phone listens. Nothing is sent back, and no internet connection is involved.
Does GPS work without internet? Why it sometimes seems not to
If GPS works offline, why do so many people see a blank screen or a spinning wheel when they lose signal? A few reasons:
The map itself is not stored on your phone
Most map apps stream map tiles from the internet as you pan around. If you have no connection and have not downloaded the area, the app knows where you are but has nothing to draw underneath the blue dot.
Assisted GPS is slower without data
Phones use a technique called assisted GPS (A-GPS), which downloads helper data over the internet to speed up the first position fix. Without a connection, the phone can still find you, but the first fix may take longer, especially if you have traveled a long way since you last used location.
Location is switched off
Turning on airplane mode on some phones turns off location services too. You need to switch location back on manually.
Search and routing rely on servers in some apps
In some apps, searching for an address or calculating a route happens on a server. With no connection, those features fail even if the map is visible.
What works offline and what doesn’t
| Feature | Without internet |
|---|---|
| Your position on the map | Works |
| Downloaded offline maps | Works |
| Navigation on downloaded maps | Works in apps with offline navigation |
| Saved places | Usually works |
| Searching new places | Limited or unavailable, depending on the app |
| Live traffic alerts | Needs a connection |
| Satellite and street view imagery | Usually needs a connection |
| Latest business details and opening hours | Needs a connection |
How to navigate with no internet: step by step
- Choose an app with offline navigation. GPS, Earth Maps & Navigation includes offline navigation, so maps you download keep working without data.
- Download the maps you need on Wi-Fi. Include your destination and the areas you will travel through. Our guide on how to download offline maps for travel covers this in detail.
- Save important places. Your accommodation, stations, the car park, a hospital.
- Plan key routes in advance while you still have a connection.
- Test it. Switch on airplane mode, turn location back on, and check that your position and the map both appear.
- Get a first fix outdoors. If the dot does not appear, step outside away from tall buildings and give the phone a minute or two.
Tip: Open your map app briefly in the place you are leaving, while you still have a connection. This gives the phone fresh helper data and can speed up the first fix when you arrive.
Where offline GPS is most useful
- Traveling abroad without a local SIM or roaming plan
- Hiking and camping in areas without coverage. See our guide on how to use GPS for hiking
- Road trips through deserts, mountains and rural regions
- Ferries, trains and flights, where signal comes and goes
- Saving data on a limited plan at home
Troubleshooting GPS when you are offline
The dot is in the wrong place or jumping around. Move to an open area, away from tall buildings, cliffs or dense trees, and wait a moment.
The map is gray or blank. The area has not been downloaded. You will need Wi-Fi or data to fetch it.
The app says location is unavailable. Check that location services are on and that the app has location permission.
The first fix takes ages. This is normal without assisted data after a long journey. Stay outdoors and keep the app open until it locks on.
The battery is draining fast. GPS plus a bright screen is demanding. Lower brightness and use airplane mode with location enabled.
Frequently asked questions
Does GPS use mobile data?
The GPS signal itself does not use data. Map apps use data to download map tiles, search, traffic and imagery, which is why offline maps save data.
Can I use GPS in airplane mode?
On most Android phones, yes. Turn on airplane mode, then switch location back on. Your phone will still receive satellite signals.
Does GPS work anywhere in the world?
Satellite positioning covers the whole planet, but accuracy drops indoors, underground and in deep valleys or dense cities where the sky is blocked.
Why does my GPS take longer to find me without internet?
Without a connection, your phone cannot download the helper data that speeds up the first fix, so it has to gather more information from the satellites directly.
